Geotechnical Design Report: A38/M42, Bromsgrove
Introduction:
We undertook investigation, assessment and geotechnical design report for an upgraded road junction where the A38 approaches Junction 1 of the M42, to the north of Bromsgrove.
We were responsible for the preparation of a Preliminary Sources Study Report (PSSR), Ground Investigation Report (GIR) and a Geotechnical Design report (GDR). The work was undertaken in accordance with HD22-08 (since replaced by CD622), and the design was accepted by Highways England, allowing the highway works to be successfully completed with minimal ground hazard related disruption.
Details:

The proposed scheme comprised the widening of a length of existing highway on the northern approach to Junction 1 of the M42, the upgrading of lighting and signage, and the construction of traffic islands, and a new side road for local residents parking.
We initially prepared a Preliminary Sources Study Report (PSSR) for the proposed highways scheme, which comprises a comprehensive desk study review of available information combined with observations from a site walkover by an experienced engineering geologist/engineer.
A geotechnical risk register was provided within the PSSR and each of the risks updated through subsequent reports on the scheme, including the Geotechnical Design Report.

Following the completion of the PSSR, an appropriately scaled site investigation was designed, taking into account site constraints including underground services and restrictions on traffic management. A Ground Investigation Report (GIR) was subsequently prepared, along with a Geotechnical Design Report (GDR) for the proposed scheme.
