Interesting Discovery During Site Investigation Works
Posted on
We are currently undertaking a variety of intrusive investigation techniques within an historic coal depot in the North East of England.
An interesting discovery was identified on day one. ‘Blue Billy’, which is often associated with coal gasification, is common in gas and coke works throughout the UK. A distinctive Prussian blue colour which has become synonymous with contaminated land, it is a ferrocyanide and contains high levels of cyanide and ammonia compounds which, if ingested, can lead to chronic risks to health.
Historical site contamination is prevalent, however this does not mean it poses an unacceptable risk to human health, controlled waters or the environment.
The purpose of any site investigation is to establish a risk assessment to enable the client and regulators to clearly define the risk of harm to any existing and proposed end users or other environmental receptors from contamination. To find out more please visit our website.
